The Federal government has given the largest railroads their own rights of eminent domain, allowing them to condemn property over local community and county objections.
However, other communities across the country have stood together to relocate intermodal rail yards. WE CAN DO THAT TOO!!!
For approximately three years Norfolk-Southern Railroad has been planning acquistion of farmland and residential property to build their Intermodal Hub facility without exploration of other possible sites.
The proposed rail yard:
- Would operate 24-7, 365 days a year, loading and unloading freight containers to and from 18 wheelers.
- Would seriously degrade the community's standard of living and reduce property values because of a) noise of trains and moving containers, b) 24-hour lighting, and c) smoke from continuous concentrated rail road engine and truck operation.
- Would adversely affect the learning environment for children and teachers at McAdory Elementary School due to noise and pollution, while subjecting them to risk of toxic spills or terrorism disasters.
- Would add up to 300,000 18 wheelers per year traveling back and forth between McAshan and the Hub Site.
- Would destroy wetlands and 5th generation farmland.
- Would require the county spending more money to repair roadways.
